BARCELONA SUFFER FURTHER INJURY BLOW

Spanish giants Barcelona have dealt with injuries throughout this season and they were dealt an additional blow on that end with the news that young midfielder Pedri won’t feature for the Catalans again this year. According to popular Spanish newspapers AS, new Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has made the decision to start his recovery from a thigh injury from the scratch and this means thatPedriwon’t be able to feature for his team until after the winter break.

Pedri was an ever-present for both club (Barcelona) and country (Spain) last season as he enjoyed a breakthrough campaign. The Spanish international played a total of 73 games for the two teams last season including six games at the Euro 2020 tournament where he was named the best young player.

In contrast to last season, Pedri has been restricted to just four appearances in the colours of Barcelona this season due to a troublesome thigh injury. The injury forced him to miss the UEFA Nations League finals in Italy last month. Despite being injured for the majority of this season, Pedri was named the Golden Boy Award winner this week ahead of Borussia Dortmund midfielder and England international Jude Bellingham.

Pedri has been left frustrated with his thigh injury as he has not been able to help his team achieve their targets from the start of the season till date.

Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez became the manager this month and one of his first acts was to mastermind the appointment of Carlos Nogueira as the head of physiotherapy. Xavi would be hoping that a new medical head would slow down the injury setbacks that have threatened to derail the Catalan giants and their targets this season.

The new medical team will start the recovery process for Pedri from the scratch in the bid to get him fit and firing on all cylinders by the start of next year.

SALAH FAILS TO SCORE AGAINST HAMMERS

Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah failed to score for two straight league games for the first time this season as he was kept bay by the West Ham United defenders when the two teams met in a Premier League clash at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday evening.

Salah was on a run of scoring in seven straight games before he was denied the chance to make it eight games by the Brighton and Hove Albion defenders. The ex-AS Roma and Fiorentina attackerhad to settle for an assist as his Liverpool side lost a two-goal advantage at home to draw 2-2 with the Seagulls. Salah provided the opening goal scored by skipper Jordan Henderson before fellow African player Sadio Mane added a second goal. Zambian midfielder Enock Mwepu pulled one goal back towards half-time before Belgian attacker Leandro Trossardlevelled proceedings in the second half to earn a point for Brighton.

In their last game, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Belgian substitute DivockOrigi were the Liverpool scorers in a 3-2 defeat to hosts West Ham United. Alisson Becker (own goal), Pablo Fornals and Kurt Zouma scored the West Ham United goals.

Despite his inability to score in the last two league games, Salah is still leading the Golden Boot race with ten goals and he has three more goals than nearest challenger Jamie Vardy of Leicester City who’s on seven goals.

Manchester United talisman Cristiano Ronaldo is far from the top two of Salah and Vardy in the race for the Golden Boot as far as Premier League football is concerned. Cristiano Ronaldo has four goals in seven starts and one substitute appearance.

Cristiano Ronaldo has to score at a faster rate if he wants to rivalVardy and Salah for the Golden Boot Award in the Premier League this season considering that he missed the first three games this season.
